Chinese Postal System as Media

Postal system could be seen as a so-called “new media” in late Qing dynasty. Other than existing  researches which regards postal system as a simply channel of information,  this lecture, from a theoretical approach of mediology, would present how Chinese postal system was historically established, how it changed relations between human and word, enabled new forms of communication and therefore created a type of media culture. Based on it, this lecture will discuss, how the case of Chinese postal system can promote our understanding of digital media.

Chen Xinsheng is a Ph.D. student in Journalism School, Fudan University and visiting Ph.D. student in University of Hamburg. His research interests include media history and urban communication. His ongoing Ph.D. thesis is a media-cultural analysis of postal system in late imperial China. Before Entering to Master-Doctor combined program in Fudan University, he got his Bachelor degree (2015) in Journalism School, Fudan University as well.
